Artificial Intelligence for Mental Health & Neuroscience

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based research methods could be highly beneficial to research at the IoPPN, and many researchers have expressed great interest to grow their expertise and exposure to implement an AI-based project within their research portfolio/team.

This conference will bring together experts to facilitate cross-disciplinary communication, via panel discussions, case presentations and Q&A's, with the ultimate aim to initiate collaborative partnership between AI experts.

This event is co -sponsored by the The Research and Innovation Committee (RIC) and the Ageing Research at King’s (ARK) and will include a welcome reception, keynote speakers, case studies and networking opportunities as well as a panel discussion chaired by Professor Richard Dobson

Keynote Speakers:

Dr Jorge Cardoso, Kings College London:
'The third AI wave and the deep learning revolution'
Deep learning, a technique popularised in 2012, has changed the landscape of machine learning, with a tremendous impact in healthcare applications. This medley will provide an introduction to the basics and fundamental concepts of deep learning, some practical aspects of applications in the medical domain, and an overview of latest developments and opportunities for future research.

Jessica Morley, AI project lead at Dept HSC & NHSX:
'AI for Healthcare: Governing the Ecosystem'
Providing an overview of how AI can help, how it can hurt, and how pro-ethical governance can ensure the 'dual advantage' of ethical AI for social good is met.

Presenters & Case Studies:

  • Dr James Cole:
    AI-enhanced Neuroimaging

  • Dr Daniel Leightley:
Identifying probable post-traumatic stress disorder: Applying machine learning to data from a military cohort

  • Dr Chris Kalafatis:
The Integrated Cognitive Assessment; an AI-enabled cognitive biomarker for MCI and Dementia

  • Dr Zeljko Kraljevic:
Unsupervised Machine Learning Applied to Named Entity Recognition and Linking in Electronic Health Records.

  • Dr Ivana Poparic (NIHR):
Industry activities & research collaboration opportunities - AI for Mental Health and Neuroscience

  • Professor Andrea Mechelli:
Neurofind - Using deep learning technology to make individualised inferences in brain disorders

    Professor Rob Stewart:

About the IoPPN Research & Innovation Committee (RIC)

The Research and Innovation Committee (RIC) provides support and direction, as well as a voice, to the academic and research staff at the IoPPN, enabling them to continue to progress their careers in their chosen fields.  Through a range of initiatives such as strategic career planning, grant writing, promotions workshops and mentoring, amongst others, the committee aims to ensure that all staff at the IoPPN can identify and access the tools and training they need to continue to make the most of being a part of the IoPPN. One key event the RIC organises every year is the newly re-branded Research Festival, which was a huge success and we are looking to expand the event even further next year, so if you have ideas for that please do let us know.

About the Ageing Research at King’s (ARK)

Ageing Research at King’s (ARK) is a cross-faculty multidisciplinary consortium of investigators which brings together scholarship and research in ageing in several complementary areas. ARK represents King’s world class excellence for research on the biology of ageing, from the basic mechanisms in biogerontology to clinical translation and the social impact of ageing. The primary purpose of ARK is to enhance multidisciplinary research collaborations within King’s to better understand the mechanisms of ageing and improving health-span.
