The challenges faced by refugees and internally displaced people across a range of contexts, including urban areas, will be discussed with specific details around how we can begin to frame the issues, understand current responses and work better across disciplines to confront complex issues.

Following the lecture, you are invited to an exclusive preview of the Luminocity exhibition showcasing the amazing work of our students from across the Built Environment disciplines.

Speaker’s biography:

Brett Moore is motivated by issues of social justice, equity and sustainability of the built environment. These concerns have paved the way for his career in humanitarian work, leading him to projects in more than 20 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East over the last 18 years. Brett has worked as an independent consultant, and also with governments, NGO's and with the UN for several years, running the architecture and engineering design team with UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services) then Shelter, Infrastructure and Reconstruction Advisor with World Vision International, working with their humanitarian team on disaster response, recovery and reconstruction programs after disasters and conflict. Brett is now the global lead of the Shelter and Settlements team at UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) where the program focuses on support to conflict-related displacement of refugees and internally displaced people across the globe. He also is the co-lead of the Global Shelter Cluster, a coordination mechanism for humanitarian shelter agencies responding to crises, under the Interagency Standing Committee.

Brett’s past humanitarian work has included leading emergency shelter programs, damage assessment, development of proposals, team leadership, program implementation and interagency-coordination for projects including education (schools and pre-schools), health (hospitals and clinics), water (supply and system rehabilitation) and sanitation, judicial infrastructure and housing (emergency shelter through to permanent housing) for disaster and conflict-affected communities, from designing refugee camps to upgrading urban slums.

He holds a Bachelor of Planning and Design, and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Melbourne and has studied Development Studies at RMIT University, Melbourne, where he maintains an affiliation with the Humanitarian Architecture Research Bureau of RMIT University and is an Adjunct Professor. A snapshot of his work was recently published in Humanitarian Architecture: 15 Stories of Architects Working After Disaster. He was a 2015-16 Loeb Fellow at Harvard Graduate School of Design, see:
